  • At a height of around 700m, the lakeside resort area of Bedugul is noticeably cooler than the south, hence its suitability for the cultivation of fruits and vegetables that couldn't survive the tropical swelter closer to sea level. Whilst the temple is the big draw, set in lovely gardens with a slightly surreal-looking playground for the kids, the Eka Karya Botanic Garden also known as the Botanical Gardens are an often-overlooked gem. It resembles a magical forest more than it does the fecund monsoon jungle the island is generally known for. It was established in 1958 and now contains over 16,000 plant collections spread out over a sprawling 160 hectares. The immaculately manicured gardens are navigable via guided driving paths and walking trails with sections such as The Balinese Cosmos (where one can learn about the role of plants in Balinese daily life), Tropical Mountain Forest, Orchid Park, Cactus Collection, and Fern Park. As it is a place for botanical research, conservation, education, and recreation, the Botanical Gardens is a wonderful place to have a picnic amongst tropical oaks or on the sprawling green lawn. | reserve

  • The Jatiluwih rice terraces in the namesake upland village in West Bali are most famous for their dramatic and exotic landscapes. The cool highlands and the breathtaking scenery of this village at the foot of Mount Batukaru make for wonderful photo opportunities and serve as a soothing retreat away from the island’s crowded south. Once a UNESCO Cultural Heritage Site candidate, the Jatiluwih rice terraces comprise over 600 hectares of rice fields that follow the flowing topography of the Batukaru mountain range. | reserve

  • Bedugul covers a large area of the central highlands of Bali around the villages of Bedugul itself, Candikuning, Pancasari, Pacung, and Wanagiri (amongst others). This is an area of great natural beauty. The focus point of the area centres on the crater lakes and the nearby botanical gardens. The whole area is at an altitude of 700 metres or more, with the tallest mountain peaks above 2,000 metres, and it could be distinctly chilly up there, no worries, our team will prepare the necessary gear for you to settle in during the trip.   • Sekumpul Waterfall is a scenic cluster of 6 to 7 narrow cascades that form the centerpiece of a lush, green, bamboo-forested valley. The falls are fed by 2 streams, and it’s the most accessible in the collection of various falls in the area. Getting down here requires some effort, though – paths comprise dirt tracks, 100 steps, and crossings over streams. A trek leads you to purpose-built gazebos where you can cool down and catch your breath while enjoying the view of the 80-meter-tall majestic fall from a distance. The falls are in the namesake village of Sekumpul, in the upland region of the Buleleng regency in North Bali, an hour’s drive southeast of Lovina Beach. | reserve
